Associate Casting Director Ajay Singh Rathore

Along with actors, there are many people who work hard to make a show a successful fare.

Tellychakkar.com has constantly been featuring people who work behind the camera and help deliver the best.

One of the talented casting directors of the small screen, Ajay Singh Rathore, got chatty with us where he spoke about his journey, work and challenges that he faced in the industry. Take a look:

How did your journey in this industry begin?

Well, I started my career as a director. It’s been more than two years now that I have been casting for television shows. I am from Jaipur and settled in Mumbai three years ago to make my career. I am a very motivated guy and like to explore my talent. Casting was always my first love and I am happy with it.

Which are the shows that you have worked on?

Udaan, MTV Web, Qubool Hai, Humsafar, Warrior High are some of the shows that I have worked on. Also, I collaborated with Beyond Dreams and casted for two shows, Jaana Na Dil Se Door and Nagarjun.

Tell us something about your working pattern.

I believe in ‘work hard, party harder’. Sometimes, I work around the clock but I make sure to meet my deadlines. I believe that a proper routine makes everything fine.

What challenges did you face in this industry?

More than challenges, I feel that the casting guys don’t get respect. Casting walo ka naam badnam hai. But I do my best and prove my ability with my work. There are three important pillars of my life, who have supported me the most in my journey. They are Aditya Surana, Vishal Gupta and Prince Modi. The three of them are into casting and quite senior to me.

What are the things that you keep in mind before casting for a particular show?

Casting is an important process to prepare a show. An actor with a good face and acting is significant. Though I give acting more preference than looks.

Which show do you think has the best cast?

I think, currently, Kawach has a good star cast.

Have you ever faced an actor’s tantrums?

Many times. But I wouldn’t like to name any actor. At the end, it’s upon you how smartly you handle the situation.

How do you handle a crisis situation wherein the lead or a character artist wants to walk out of the show?

Television industry is quite uncertain and things change overnight. An intelligent person will always have options ready for them in their do or die situation.

Do TRPs affect you?

No. After casting, it’s upon writers and creatives to take the ship ahead.

Any suggestions for the ones who want to get into casting?

Be focused, stay updated, build relationships and most importantly, be patient.

Good luck, Ajay!
