She is an alumna of Film and Television institute of India which is located at Pune. She made her debut in the year 1974 as parallel actress.The actress is also into Indian politics and thus is a part of the upper house of the Indian parliament. She is married to Bollywood's most reknown screen writer and poet Javed Akhtar. Her parents are a part of the communist party of india.She completed her schooling from Queen Mary school, Mumbai and possess a psychology degree from St. Xavier's college, Mumbai. As mentioned earlier she made her debut in the movie Ankur which happened in the year 1974. The movie Ankur is based on a true story which took place in Hyderabad.She has been awarded the National Film award for the movies such as Arth, Khandar,Parth and Godmother. She is the step mother of Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar.She is also the Goodwill ambassador United Nations population Fund. She was also awarded as the Best actress for her performance in Hindi movies by the Bengal Film journalist's association of India. The film God mother bagged her 6 National film awards.She also seems to be a staunch feminist as she has worked for women's rights. She also been awarded in international film festivals like Taormina Arte Festival in Italy, Chicago International Film Festival and L.A. outfest. She is a social activist too.
