EXCLUSIVE! The swords were heavier than the weight of both my hands, says Gracy Goswami on playing Khanzada in Hotstar's Empire

I started with basics like squats, my thighs were jammed and I remember telling my father that I couldn't do it. He pushed me to learn and doing warm-ups with such heavy swords was challenging,’ says the actress.
EXCLUSIVE! "The swords were heavier than the weight of both my hands", Gracy Goswami on playing Khanzada in Hotstar's Empire

MUMBAI: Gracy Goswami gained massive popularity and love from fans with her character Amrit in Kyun Utthe Dil Chhod Aaye, it indeed added a feather to her hat and she proved her skills with the show. She portrayed a character that was much older than her real age and she did complete justice to it.

Talking about her stellar performances, she essayed the character of Khanzada in Empire and we must say, it is one of those noteworthy performances from any star. This shall not only add a feather but mark a milestone in her career.

Tell us something about your character and its preparations?

We had workshops to prepare for the scenes. The character had more to do with eyes. I knew that Khanzada is someone brave, fierce and so protective about her family, she could go to any extent to safeguard her family. It was a very strong character, as she was young she had to be innocent also adding she was intelligent. It had a lot of Gracy into it, when we do daily soaps we have to act a little louder to connect with people but with the web, we have to be more natural. The looks were subtle, sharp and grey it spoke a lot. I had to go deep into the character to portray it perfectly on screen.

What challenges did you face while learning sword fight for the show?

I learnt swordfight for the scenes, I had taken sessions and my hands got swelled, I couldn't even hold my phone with them, trust me the swords were heavier than both my hands. There were times when we shot till midnight, we were sword fighting with real swords till dawn. I am really happy to see the results and the appreciation I received.

I started with basics like squats, my thighs were jammed and I remember telling my father that I couldn't do it. He pushed me to learn and doing warm-ups with such heavy swords. It was indeed extremely challenging for me as my hands and body used to ache terribly. But I am glad I did this.

Which were your favourite scenes from the series?

I have two favourite scenes, the first one is when Khanzada comes forward and tells Shahbani that, "Riyasat ko jaiz karne ke liye aapko sabko maarna zaroori nahi hai, agar shahi khoon mein thodi si kami ho toh who Badshah nahi ban sakta." that's how she saves the whole empire in Babur's absence. Shahbani looks at her immense beauty and falls for her. Another one is where they are about to kill Wazir Khan, she comes and fights and protects Wazir Khan from getting killed. That's when they come to know that Khanzada was learning it secretly.
