An ode to Indian Cinema, Superboys of Malegaon takes inspiration from the life and journey of Nasir Sheikh, an amateur filmmaker from Malegaon who, along with his passionate group of friends brings a cinematic spotlight on the small town of Malegaon in Maharashtra.
Reema Kagti’s upcoming film explores unique storytelling by adapting the experiences of real-life protagonists, in a full-length feature that takes a more cinematic approach, weaving a compelling narrative inspired by real-life events.
Recently, film’s producer Zoya Akhtar opened up about picking up the deeply resonating story of Superboys of Malegaon as her next project. On being asked why this particular story stuck with her, Akhtar said, “Nasir—the filmmaker, he is truly unique a person. He started the whole DIY filmmaking phenomena – back then none of us could’ve imagined that one could make a film with such limited resources, we know the effort it takes, and he started with so little. Yet, through sheer hustle, gathering friends, and pouring his heart into the story, he brought his idea to life. He put Malegaon on the map, and that is truly inspiring.”
Superboys of Malegaon enables a more profound exploration of its characters’ emotional journeys, adding richness and dramatic nuance to their creative journeys. While celebrating Malegaon's vibrant DIY filmmaking culture, the film goes beyond the surface, offering an intimate look into the lives of these filmmakers—their aspirations, hardships, and unwavering pursuit of cinema. It also sheds light on the unique challenges faced by aspiring directors in small towns, where access to equipment, funding, and industry opportunities remains limited.
An Amazon MGM Studios, Excel Entertainment, and Tiger Baby production, Superboys of Malegaon is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti. Written by Varun Grover, the film is set to release in theaters on February 28 across India, the US, UK, UAE, Australia, and New Zealand.
