MUMBAI: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is and always has been among the biggest beauty icons in India. Her makeup aesthetic in the 90s remains coveted till date, given how flawlessly she pulled off every trend she was seen in. As the 90s come back in fashion, let's revisit Aishwarya's stunning onscreen makeup looks from the 90s which inspired people to embrace certain beauty trends.

1. High-raised eyebrows
Thin eyebrows were always a 90s trend, but a lot of Bollywood stars did not actually have them shaped in the raised brow style, at least not the way Aishwarya did. Her eyebrows were shaped such that there was considerable space between the lid and the brow, leading to a higher arch and more raised brow look. It was therefore Aishwarya whom we can credit for really popularising the skinny 90s brow style in India, thanks to her iconic raised, thin and arched brows.

2. Brick-toned brown lips
A lot of people wore brown lipstick in the 90s but Aishwarya in particular popularised the brick-toned brown shade in India. She wore it in her first movie Iruvar, in Jeans, in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and several other films. So it became a signature look for her that people really coveted. As a result, brick-brown lipstick became quite a rage.

3. Wingless bar eyeliner
Aishwarya’s 90s makeup was never complete without that blunt-ended bar liner famous in that era. This eyeliner style does not elongate the eyes but instead makes the lash line look thicker. So despite being uncomplicated, this eye look was so pretty that it made everyone ditch the wings of the 80s and gave us a lot of eyeliner inspiration ideal for daily wear. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that this simple, lash line-framing classic black liner became a fad in India thanks to actresses like her.

4. Matte brown lipsticks
Brown lipstick was common in the 90s, but not mattes per se. Most actresses opted for creamier formulas, or wore frosty, pearlescent icy browns. Aishwarya, on the other hand, made the matte coffee brown lip shade popular, rocking it with black eyeliner in loads of movies.

5. Soft brown gradient shadow
Aishwarya did occasionally wear the silver and cool-toned eyeshadows popular in the 90s. But her most commonly-worn eyeshadow was a neutral brown that matched her preference for brown lipsticks. She always wore a wash of that colour on her lids, giving a subtle smokiness without too many dark hues involved in the mix.

6. No-blush bronzer look
Red blush swept across the cheeks was common in the 80s and 90s in Bollywood, as seen on Sridevi or Madhuri Dixit Nene. A lot of actresses wore blush where one normally places bronzer, so the cheeks were intensely colourful. Aishwarya changed this trend.

She kept her face relatively blush-free and only bronzed the outer perimeter of her cheekbones. In doing so, she kept her makeup quite monochromatic and minimal-looking, which was in keeping with international 90s makeup trends, but relatively uncommon in Bollywood.
