What are some key differences between NFC vs Bluetooth?

The two most best ways to share information wirelessly is through Bluetooth and NFC. Let’s take a look at some of the key differences between them.

MUMBAI : Nowadays, it has become more and more easier to pass on information between devices as technology advances day by day. Wireless technology has boomed in recent years, providing many ways to share media, and data wirelessly and efficiently. The two most best ways to share information wirelessly is through Bluetooth and NFC. Both of these technologies use radio waves to form connections and communicate with devices over short ranges and allow information sharing of all sorts. So let’s take a look at some of the key differences between them.

Bluetooth technology has been there for the longest time. It uses Ultra High Frequency (UHF) radio waves in the range between 2.402 GHz and 2.480 GHz to divide data into packets. Each packet of information gets transmitted on one of the 79 various Bluetooth channels, which have a bandwidth of 1 MHz (Mega Hertz). Bluetooth offers high energy efficiency and performance. Bluetooth usually requires power and can last for a month on a single-cell battery.

NFC is Near Field Communication that allows for short range communication between devices at a frequency of 13.56 MHz. NFC works on an alternating magnetic field instead of radio waves, and hence does not require a power source. Data shared through this form of technology is usually read-only data and cannot be altered. It also requires a minimum of one transmitting device, and one on the receiving end.

The most common differences that they have is in speed, power, range, and pairing. In terms of speed, Bluetooth overtakes NFC with a speed of 1 MB per second, whereas the maximum speed of NFC is 424 KB per second. In terms of power, as mentioned earlier, Bluetooth requires a power source but NFC doesn’t. Bluetooth’s can work in a range of up to 100 metres between the two devices, whereas NFC works in a limited range of less than 4 cms. Bluetooth devices require manual pairing and setup, whereas NFC does not need to be paired and information sharing happens as soon as the device is turned on.

So these were the common differences between Bluetooth and NFC. Was this information useful for you? Let us know in the comments below.
