MUMBAI: Amruta Subhash has been a part of the Indian film industry for around two decades. The actress grabbed the attention of Hindi moviegoers after her amazing performance in Gully Boy. She was seen as Murad’s (Ranveer Singh) mother in the film. Currently, Amruta is busy garnering praise for her performance in Sony LIV’s Wonder Women.
TellyChakkar recently interacted with Amruta and spoke to her about playing Ranveer’s mother, upcoming projects, and more…
When you did Gully Boy were you hesitant to take up the role, as at a very young age you were playing Ranveer Singh’s mother?
No, because for me, content has always been the driving factor. Zoya (Akhtar) had given me the entire script, and when I read it I was like I have to be a part of this. So, for me, I wanted to live that character; I was like I forgot her age. But, I had to say no to a lot of work after that, and I am very good at saying no. I waited for the right kind of roles. I played a bar dancer in Bombay Begums-a seductress role. Even Alankrita Shrivastava was apprehensive, she was like I have seen her in Gully Boy, how can she play a bar dancer? But, it was Shruti Mahajan who believed in me, so I want to thank all the casting directors. So, yeah it was a risk, but somehow I trust the universe and it has always fulfilled all my wishes.
Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, Ram Madhvani; when it comes to directors, you have been quite lucky. But, do you still have a list of directors you want to work with?
There are many directors I want to work with. Not only Indian but even international filmmakers. I want to work with Meghna Gulzar, Vikramaditya Motwane, and Anees Bazmee. Even when it comes to actors I want to work with Meryl Streep.
Tell us something about your upcoming projects…
I have a very interesting project with an amazing female director. But, I cannot announce it right now, the OTT platform it's coming on will announce it. But, let me just tell you it’s with an amazing director and actor.
