MUMBAI: Abhishek Bachchan had made his debut in Bollywood with ‘Refugee’ in 2000 opposite his ex-girlfriend, Karisma Kapoor's younger sister, Kareena Kapoor. He was tagged as the next big thing in the industry. However, more than his acting skills, Abhishek was in the news for his love story with Karisma.

In 2002, the nation was waiting for the Kapoors and the Bachchans to turn their dosti into rishtedaari with Karisma Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan's wedding. But unfortunately, in 2003, a shocking announcement of their engagement being called off abruptly had made everyone disheartened. Abhishek and Karisma had dated for five years. However, destiny had other plans for them.

When Karisma and Abhishek's engagement was called off, it affected Kareena and Abhishke's relationship too. In a throwback interview with Simi Garewal on her show, Rendezvous With Simi Garewal, Kareena Kapoor had opened up about her equation with Abhishek and had stated: “In my life there is still room for Abhishek Bachchan, I just wish there is a little bit of room still left in his heart for me.”

However, when their wedding was called-off abruptly, it was rumoured that the real reason behind their sudden call-off was because of Karisma's mother, Babita. It was reported that she wanted a stable and secure life for her daughters. Having undergone a tough phase after separation from Randhir Kapoor, Babita single-handedly raised her daughters, Karisma and Kareena Kapoor.
