Romancing the nostalgia

Star Plus is launching a new weekend hourly show Aek Chabi Hai Padoss Mein from 25th November. The serial is reminiscent of erstwhile shows like Wagle Ki Duniya, Nukkad and Hum Panchi Ek Chawl Ke.The setting of the story is a middle class ghetto called Colonel Gunj. It's a multicultural neighbourhood with characters drawn from all backgrounds. The plotlines are built around the daily lives of the people who live in Colonel Gunj.
The male protagonist Sandeep (played by Varun Badola) is the voice of the mohalla. He has solutions for everyone's mundane issues. Urmi, the female lead (played by Suhasi Garodia), who had earlier featured in DD's Shakti is a happy-go-lucky girl. Urmi has a soft corner for Sandeep, but Sandeep is unaware of this feeling. Zoya (played by Akasha who hails from Delhi), is Urmi's best friend and her co-conspirator. Zoya always has an out-of-box solution to Urmi's problems. There is a certain charisma to the character of Urmi and four neighbourhood boys are caught in the charm and their single minded aim is to find ways to win Urmi. The story caters to small-town-middle-class sentiments. It is a bold theme given the current mood when the audience has become more aspirational. Adds Anupam Kalidhar, the producer of the show "It's true that nowadays we do not see many shows with this kind of a theme. The audience might be more aspirational than before, but many among us come from a middle class background. Our target audience is this middle class who still appreciates and closely relates to the values portrayed in the show." Of late there has been an upsurge in themes related to middle-class values, a case in point being SAB's Mohalla Mohabbat Wala, which is again a story told in middle-class milieu. Seems like the telly is in nostalgic mood.
