MUMBAI: At Vijaykanth's funeral, superstar Rajinikanth was inconsolable. To pay his final respects to the Tamil actor who turned into a politician, the actor went to his funeral. One day following the horrific death of Vijaykanth, his funeral was held in Chennai. On December 28, a Thursday, Vijaykanth passed away. Following a positive COVID-19 test, the 71-year-old leader of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) was put on ventilatory support.

In a now-viral video, Rajinikanth was seen sitting in his car and sobbing while other mourners joined him. In the footage, the actor had a distraught look. Rajinikanth was spotted being comforted by several attendees, but he was clearly affected by Vijaykanth's death and broke down in tears.

When the news of Vijaykanth's death broke, Rajinikanth was in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, shooting his next movie, Vettaiyan. According to reports, the actor called off the shoot and went to Chennai for the funeral. It has been confirmed by trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai that Rajinikanth will be present at the funeral.

“#SuperstarRajinikanth who is shooting for his #Vettaiyan in #Nagercoil is coming back to Chennai to pay his last respects to his dear friend #CaptainVijayakanth (sic),” he had written on X. Although they never shared the screen in Tamil movies, Vijayakanth and Rajinikanth had a close relationship. However, the two actors made brief appearances in the song Vangaala Kadale of K Balachander's Manathil Urudhi Vendum.

Rajinikanth stated, while speaking with the media at the Tuticorin airport, “My heart aches. Vijayakanth was a man with great willpower. Lastly, I saw him at the DMDK’s general body meeting and thought he would bounce back after battling his health issues. His death is a huge loss to the people of Tamil Nadu.”

He added, “If he was healthy, he would have been a formidable force in politics. He would have done so many good deeds for the people. The people of Tamil Nadu have now lost him. May his soul rest in peace.”
