They are the ones who run and almost rule the world of television. Master artists and visualisers, they create dramatic sequences on the small screen that touch emotional chords in the hearts of millions. And the reason for their success is because they share not just professional but personal ties as well. Two’s Company introduces the lovable and respected duos in the world of television who work together to weave magic. Let’s take a peek into the lives of these dashing entrepreneurs and understand what makes them and their shows tick. This week we feature Sudhir and Seema Sharma of Sunshine Productions. Sudhir Sharma, Founder and Producer at Sunshine Productions, studied Arts at the Delhi University. He started his career with Jain TV News as a journalist and then went on to assist director Pradeep Sarkar and later joined Zee TV. Sudhir takes a keen interest in theatre and loves watching movies and listening music. Seema Sharma, Creative Director and Founder at Sunshine Productions completed her education from Delhi University. She started her career with Zee TV and then went on to work with Sony TV. Seema loves to play the guitar and has a penchant for car rallies. The couple co-founded Sunshine Productions in 1998. From the house of Sunshine Productions

  • 12/24 Karol Bagh (2009)
What was the first thought that crossed your mind when you saw each other for the first time? Sudhir: Terror (laughs). We both worked for Zee TV way back in 1994. She joined earlier and I came in later. She was the news producer and I had to work under her as a senior correspondent. But when I joined she was on leave and whenever I wanted to do anything everyone told me to seek Seema’s permission. I wondered who she was and terror crept into me. But later we met, started working together and realised that we are quite compatible with each other. That is how we fell in love and got married in 1999. Seema: When I saw and talked to him for the first time I found him soft-spoken and quite a gentleman. Usually journalists are very rough and aggressive but he was quite an exception. I remember I was told that two new people would be working under me and I was wondering how they would be. When I met Sudhir he came across as a very well-mannered and nice person. How compatible are you two? Seema: We strike a nice balance. We have been friends for a long time before we decided to get married. We still treat each other as friends rather than husband and wife in the typical sense. We have not changed as individuals and that is a primary reason why we share a compatible and healthy relationship. Sudhir: I would like to add to Seema’s thoughts. I think the fact that we are working together makes us more compatible. We know how the industry functions, so if I am not around for 5 days she knows the reason. People say that a couple should not be in the same profession but I absolutely disagree with the notion. In fact it is beneficial if a couple understands each other’s professional needs, ambitions and limitations. Of course there would be clashes but who doesn’t fight? Issues get resolved if there is love and understanding in a relationship. We not only share the same personal but also professional goals. That makes our relationship stronger. Does it get difficult to balance professional and personal life? Sudhir: It does at times. But we have our roles bifurcated. We give space to each other. As I mentioned that we are working together, so it gives us the liberty to decide how much time we want to allot to our personal and professional life. It is absolutely our call to decide if we want to work on two shows or ten shows. We know how much pressure we can handle. Seema: As a woman I have to handle responsibilities at home and take care of our kids. So at times Sudhir takes more responsibility at the work front and I handle household work. But the best part is that we work together and we can flip our responsibilities. Suppose someday I need to be in the office for some specific work, he comes home early and takes care of the kids. So it is all about being mature and dealing with things calmly. So things are always calm? Seema: No, of course we have issues and difference of opinions. But we talk it out. No banging of phone or TV remote. Sudhir: Whenever we have any issue she keeps absolutely quiet. She won’t talk at all and I am the one who has to talk it out and solve the problem. Now after so many years I know something has gone wrong when she suddenly goes mum. But we don’t shout or bang stuffs, we just believe in discussing things and solving issues. How was Sunshine Productions born? Sudhir: Sunshine Productions was co-founded by us in 1998. We started producing shows four years ago but before that we were involved in promo productions and packaging of shows. We also produced a lot of radio programmes. So the production house was there but we didn’t want to produce shows till something really excited us. That’s how we started with Miley Jab Hum Tum and moved on to Karol Bagh. Our approach has been slow and steady and there’s lot in store in the future. Seema: The journey with Sunshine Productions has been steady but fruitful and I am happy being an integral part of it. Do you feel you have enough creative liberty as show makers? Seema: We have always done shows that we wanted to do. I know people say that we need mature serials on the lines of international shows, but one needs to understand that sensibilities in every country are different. We make shows that adhere to our culture and upbringing. And I believe that Indian viewers have become more acceptable and open and they are ready to watch shows with different concepts and ideas. Sudhir: Personally, I can’t relate to international shows. I watch them to seek awareness and to keep myself updated, but I can’t say that these shows are better than ours. I relate to Balaji shows or films made by Yash Raj Productions, among others. It is true that things are very TRP driven, but if a show is good it will definitely gain numbers. Things are changing and makers are experimenting and coming up with shows that are different and effective. So there is enough creative liberty for producers and directors. Personally, I am dying to make better comedies and musicals and we will do it in the future. Now tell us about one thing that you like about him/her the most... Sudhir: She is very giving and she will help, love and support unconditionally. I also like the fact that she is very sorted as a person and she has answers for all problems. She doesn’t get entangled in issues and deals with things with a calm-head. Seema: He accepts faults very easily and he is very caring as a person. What is the thing that you hate about him/her the most? Seema: He gets flustered pretty easily. He needs to learn how to deal with things calmly. He wants everything to be perfect and gets angry when things don’t happen according to his wish. So this is one habit that I don’t like at all. Sudhir: She doesn’t talk when there’s any problem. I have to really try hard to find out the reason for her sudden silence. I want her to talk when she is upset. Apart from that everything is fine. What is the song that suits him/her? Seema: I think the song You Fill up My Senses by John Denver suits both of us. We love the song and keep hearing it every now and then. Sudhir: I will also mention the same song as we both love it and shall also check my play list to find out if there’s any other song (laughs). Can you share one secret about each other? Seema: He has got canine teeth hidden somewhere in his mouth. People usually get wisdom teeth, but he keeps getting canine teeth. He can bite really hard (laughs). Sudhir: There is nothing secretive about her but I want to mention that she wants to participate in a car rally. She is mad about cars and car rallies. What is the cutest thing about him/her? Seema: The cutest thing about him is that he cannot drive a car (laughs). That’s the kind of balance we have. He can’t drive and I want to participate in a car rally. Sudhir: I love it when she plays the guitar. I find it really cute. Who disciplines and who pampers the kids? Sudhir: Well, we both pamper and we both discipline our kids. We have two children, Veer who is 6 and Sameera who is about to turn 5. We give them liberty and space but discipline them whenever needed. Seema: I agree with Sudhir. What are your future plans? Sudhir: Talks for a fiction show are on and things will get finalised in the next few days. I cannot divulge much at this point of time. Furthermore, there is one more show in the pipeline and it is at the scripting stage. So these are the two shows that I am currently working on. In the future I want to focus on producing and coming up with regional shows as its market is quite huge right now and will grow in the future. Seema: We are really hopeful of creating good shows in the regional arena. Cultures might be different but emotions are identical all across the globe. So I think regional shows will click with the masses. Furthermore, we are planning to venture into films and we will make commercial movies. We always wanted to make shows that are different and creative and viewers can expect some good shows from Sunshine Productions in the future.
