JAYWALKING, Keanu style!

Every city has its own flavour, a distinct identity, so does Mumbai. And there is a certain section of people one only gets to see and meet here and they are called Jaywalkers. Before I get into the psyche and description of this species let me tell you jaywalking is an offence by law! (I too didn’t know that). In Mumbai everyone has a mind of their own and has such a strong individual streak that logic or rules don’t mean anything.

While driving on Mumbai roads one encounters these pedestrians who decide to raise their hand as though to indicate ‘Stop’ like a traffic signal flashing red light. It simply means ‘STOP, I am crossing the road.’ Here comes the jaywalker! All jaywalkers look inspired by Keanu Reeves from Matrix where they believe that the world has to stop at the sight of every raised hand! They are also likely to be found most ‘exactly’ where the traffic signal is and crossing road on the side where the traffic is moving. The best part is this species is blissfully oblivious of the world around. Roads are their domain and you better obey their command! Now, now, the most important thing about jay walking is it is a contagious phenomenon. When even those behind wheels turn into jaywalkers! Err, moi included. But then why blame people alone where on Mumbai roads do we get to see zebra crossing? On a serious note it needs to change we need to understand law without being fined. We need to respect traffic rules. Above all we need to value human life. Let’s make the change starting now. Start today. Wanna cross the road? WAIT for the traffic to STOP, everyone gets a chance.
