MUMBAI: Dalljiet Kaur is one of the most popular actresses in the telly world. She has been a part of several TV shows in her long career span and established a name for herself. On the personal front, Dalljiet is mother of a son and has witnessed a lot of ups and downs.

In a chat with TellyChakkar, the actress spoke about society’s behaviour towards a divorcee, negativity, and more.

Has it ever happened that people talk behind your back regarding your divorce or your personal life? “All the time! But I'm grateful for the people in my society where I currently live. They take care of my son as well, sometimes even more than me. But in general, the society as a whole hasn't been that kind towards me. The society does react when I openly talk about giving my love life a second chance, they're like how can she even talk about it? Doesn't she have a kid? That taboo regarding divorce is very vague.”

How do you handle the negativity that you get regarding your divorce? “Whenever you see a successful marriage, there are efforts and compromises from both sides. I remember people telling me in a satirical tone that "please don't commit suicide," or "being a single mom would be difficult because of the way men would look at you," and I was so disgusted! I have very supportive friends around me and I even have male friends who are very open minded and respect me. People have their own opinions, and I will consider their opinions if they're willing to pay my bills or help me in any way or else I just don't care about their opinions about my life. I have learnt it over time that keep your circle smaller and don't let other people's opinions bother you.”

Do you think that social media is been misused? “Recently, in an interview, a small girl was enacting the role of Gangubai, which kind of felt incorrect. I think kids should be restricted to a certain level. We should preserve the innocence of our children in our society.”

What change do you wish to see in our society in the coming future? “I hope we won't need women's day for empowering women. The basic rights to safety, education, and equal pay scale should be established for all the women. I hope my son would have to compete with women in terms of physical sports, mental level, and success level. We should have women and men in the same peripheral. Women are powerful in their own ways, but I'm saying at least give them an equal opportunity.”
