Hi-tea with Arif Zakaria at Grain & Bagel

Check the slideshow above My guest, television and film actor Arif Zakaria’s guess is right – the recently opened eatery in Gulmohur Road, Juhu, Grain & Bagel – as the name suggests, is predominantly a breakfast place. With limited choice, we settled for multi grain bagel with veggies and chipotle mayonnaise and White Almond & Custard Apple Smoothie…hmmm tasted different and worth trying. Remember him as Emmi Begum in Darmiyan or his portrayal of a lecherous piano teacher-turned-vengeful ghost in Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted or the performance of a police officer in Jism 2 or the latest Krrish series where he has played a nuclear scientist, the versatile actor who has essayed roles in Deepa Mehta’s 1947 Earth, Dance Like A Man is a name to reckon with when it comes to performing diverse roles. Arif has done theatre on a big scale and travelled the world performing in plays. He admires the Roshans and is elated on Krrish 3’s stupendous success. Run by Badal Chopra and his partners, catered to by one of the partners (by his company Trupti Caterers), the menu here consists of salads, soups and sandwiches. If you are not a bread and bagel person, try their BBQ Rolls of Spicy Paneer/Chicken Galafi, Subz Shrikhampuri Kebab or Pahadi Aloo Khushnuma with international selection of Falafel, Satay and paneer/chicken Shawarma in Pita thrown in for variety. Besides tea and coffee, mocktails and smoothies are available. Tasting their signature bagel sandwiches which include fluffy scrambled eggs with chicken and cheddar in a grilled bagel and lettuce, red onion & fresh tomato signature bagel sandwich with cream cheese and arrabiata, I find them healthy. Arif opted for Egg White Omlette which he said he was having after a long time. For the second round, I tried and found Director’s Special consisting of strawberry, litchi crush with fresh ginger and a dash of Tabasco and sprite rejuvenating. Preferring films and documentaries to TV serials which Arif finds demanding and after some time the story gets to flogging the dead horse, he reveals the role offered has to be really strong for him to take up a TV show. The actor who has trained in mixed martial arts believes in doing everything in moderation. He loves investing in technology and is an Apple IPod freak. On the anvil are a mixed bag of movies like Saturday Night, Darr @ Mall and Blue Mountain. While we look forward to seeing more of the talented actor I wish him luck and success in all his future endeavours. After bagels and sandwiches, it is time for something sweet. Full marks to their wonderful dessert contractor Pink Sugar – visit Grain & Bagel especially for their low calorie dessert version of pizza – Brownie Pizza; want to get a combined taste of cheesecake and brownie, then go for Cheezers; If cupcakes are your passion, don’t miss out on Pink Sugar’s cupcake version of cheesecake. Gooey Chocolate Fondant is best with ice cream; you can even took home some Ruis Chewies (brownies) and goodies for gifting like the Red Velvet Jar in which classic red velvet comes packed in a jar. Be it birthday, anniversary, wedding, baby shower or corporate events, Pink Sugar does tempt you to come up with a reason to celebrate! Rapid fire Q’s with Arif Fave cuisine… Indian.
