MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings are enduring a disastrous IPL 2025 campaign, with only two wins in nine games and virtually no chance of making the playoffs. While the team remains mathematically in contention, their performance has been underwhelming. MS Dhoni’s return as captain has done little to change their fortunes, and the legendary franchise appears to be heading toward its worst finish yet.

Auction miscalculations, captaincy instability, and aging stars have plagued CSK. The injury to regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad forced Dhoni to step in, but even his presence hasn’t sparked a turnaround. At 43, Dhoni has managed just 140 runs this season and struggles physically, with CSK coach Stephen Fleming admitting that Dhoni’s knees limit how long he can stay at the crease.
Reflecting on Dhoni’s form and CSK’s struggles, legendary wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist voiced a tough but heartfelt opinion.
"The big one, MS Dhoni. He has nothing more to prove to anyone in the game. He has achieved everything that there is. MS… well, he'll know what he wants to do, but I'm saying, for the future – it's going to cost me this, I know – but he perhaps doesn't need to be there next year. I love you, MS. You are a champion, an icon," Gilchrist said on Cricbuzz.
Though Dhoni had a storybook finish last season, leading CSK to a fifth title, his decision to return may not have gone as hoped. While fans may still dream of another season, voices like Gilchrist’s suggest it may be time for the legend to walk away.
