MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings are facing another tough season in the IPL, with their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. After finishing just outside the top four last year, their 2025 campaign has been even more disappointing. With only two wins in nine matches, CSK find themselves at the bottom of the points table.

Their season began with a win over Mumbai Indians at Chepauk, but consistent losses have since exposed glaring issues. The middle order has underperformed, with Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, and Rahul Tripathi failing to deliver. Shivam Dube has carried much of the batting burden alone, while an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad led to the return of veteran skipper MS Dhoni—though his presence hasn’t reversed their fortunes.
Former cricketer Ajay Jadeja addressed the team’s decline, pointing out the emotional hangover from the previous season.
“The last one was probably more emotional, don't forget they won the year before that… But there was probably a curve that was heading down.”
He criticized CSK’s auction strategy as a key reason for their struggles this year.
“I think that the auction was where you could see that... they do not have what, you know, the firepower, that... most other teams have acquired.”
Jadeja also noted CSK’s uncharacteristic changes to their playing XI—something the team had typically avoided in the past.
“This year, Conway came to three games, Rachin is now out. So that is something new... maybe because of the uncertainty at the auction... this is also what we are seeing.”
With only a few games left, CSK now need a miracle to make the playoffs.
