MUMBAI: Mumbai Indians (MI) secured a crucial win against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday, March 31, climbing off the bottom of the IPL standings and pushing KKR to the 10th spot. This much-needed victory helped MI bounce back after suffering defeats in their first two matches of the season. However, skipper Rohit Sharma’s struggles with the bat continued, as he was dismissed for just 13 runs.

Rohit’s place in the MI lineup has been under scrutiny, with a string of underwhelming performances over the last two IPL seasons. Coming into the 2025 edition, the former captain desperately needed runs but managed only 0 and 8 in the first two games. With another disappointing outing against KKR, calls for his exclusion from the side have grown louder.

Weighing in on the debate, former England captain Michael Vaughan remarked on Cricbuzz that Rohit Sharma is retaining his spot in the MI lineup based purely on reputation. "If your name isn’t Rohit Sharma, you’re probably losing your place at some point with those numbers. They aren’t good enough for a player of his caliber,” Vaughan stated.

The criticism echoed on social media, where fans expressed their frustration. One user wrote, "Enough of playing on reputation alone. Rohit should retire from the IPL and let young talents shine. He's become irrelevant in 2025."

However, despite his critique, Vaughan emphasized that he wouldn’t drop Rohit from the squad. "I’m not saying they’ll get rid of him. He needs to rediscover his flow, rhythm, and mojo. For Mumbai to fix what’s gone wrong, their senior players must step up," Vaughan added.

With the victory against KKR, MI climbed to sixth place on the points table. Their next match is scheduled against the Lucknow Super Giants on Friday.
