During the conversation with Mr. Bachchan, both Leander and Dipa explained their respective thoughts on being an athlete, the hard work that goes into being one, and their journey that makes us so proud of them. Throughout the conversation, Mr Bachchan was left awestruck and picked up quite a few nuances of their respective fields.

As the conversation progressed, both Leander and Dipa shared a few details on how they are so dedicated to their respective fields. Leander spoke about ‘muscle memory’ which intrigued Mr. Bachchan. Leander said, “The angle in which the opponent places his foot, I understand where the ball will land (during service or ground stroke).” To which Mr. Bachchan enquired that to constantly look at the opponents feet, to his racquet to ones own court… to anticipate this timing must be quite tough.

Leander added further, “This is what is called muscle memory. After around 3 million repetitions is when memory starts building in the muscles. It takes around 10 years, Sir. For every shot, you need muscle memory. Especially when you play under pressure, in Wimbledon centre court, there are people watching you from the stands, in the 5th set when its 4 all and (the score is) 30/40, and you have to serve, the hand starts to shake a little. Toh ye muscle memory kafi jaroori hai tab, Sir.” Leander added that Tennis is played with a lot of technique. Along with power, speed and mental toughness, one also need technique. There is a whole lot of practice and hard work involved.

Dipa Karmakar explained the techniques and angles required in gymnastics. She said, “Humari bhi angles hote hai sir, 90 degree, 180 degree, half track. Agar wo complete nahi hota, to wo not counted hota hai.” Hearing which Mr. Bachchan said, “Ye to pehli baar hume jankaari mil rahi hai ki khel-kud main mathematics lagti hai. Kis angle pe pair rakha hai, kis anglr pe jump lena hai… very tough.”

He asked Dipa about the Produnova Vault and how she decided that she wants to do it. To which Dipa said, “A foreign coach once said that girls cant do anything. So I spoke to my coach Nandi Sir that we have to win a medal anyhow. Sir told me about this vault but also added how dangerous it is. But I couldn’t hear the word ‘dangerous’ in that conversation. I just decided that I have to put in my hard work and win the medal anyhow.”
