Hooligan autorickshaw driver who attacked Monaz Mevawala caught; Mumbai Police assures actress complete protection

Monaz Mevawala

Monaz Mevawala is one brave actress. Had it not been for her presence of mind of shooting a video of the assault on her cell phone, her attacker- the maniac auto driver- would have still been at large, roaming around on the streets of Mumbai, scot free. The video was later uploaded by her on Facebook and it instantly went viral garnering a chain of 4,104 shares.

Call it the power of social media; the matter soon reached the ears of the ever vigilant Mumbai Police chief Rakesh Maria. The police immediately swung into action and within no time the culprit auto driver, whose first name is ‘Haider’, was picked up from his residence at Goregaon and put behind bars.

When we called Monaz today, the actress still sounded a bit concerned about her and other women folks’ safety in the city. “I am still a bit apprehensive about my safety given the fact that he may be out of jail some day. But I have complete faith in Mumbai Police and they have assured me complete protection from him which has made me feel safe and secure.”

The incident which happened in Goregaon in broad daylight only brings to fore the unending brazen attacks on women. It has also made Monaz more wary. “I will be extra careful henceforth. When for no reason, this mad driver can attack me, it does make me feel more apprehensive especially with auto drivers,” shared Monaz who has now stocked herself with a pepper spray to ward off any such future attacks.

The auto driver for the moment is cooling his heels in the lock-up. The police has charged him under various sections of assault and are building a water-tight case against him. Monaz, on her part, is ready to fight it out in the court of law when the date of hearing comes. “I want that man to understand his mistake and repent for his wrongdoings,” said Monaz.

The entire episode however has only ended up increasing Monaz’s admiration for the men in khaki. Thanking the Mumbai Police profusely for their prompt help, Monaz said, “I had lodged an FIR in the morning and by the time I reached home, I got a call from the police informing me that the driver has been caught. I would like to thank Mumbai’s Police Commissioner Mr. Rakesh Maria and other police officials for their prompt action and support.”

Well, looks like our new police chief is soon becoming Mr. Dabangg for the women folks of our city.
