MUMBAI: A few days back we had heard that a petition was filed against Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Gangubai Kathiawadi to stop the release of the film. The family members of Gangubai demanded to change the name of the film just two days before the release of the film. In the past, we have seen many Bollywood films that had to change the name of their films due to controversy or for hurting the religious sentiments of the public. Today, let us see the list of Bollywood movies whose titles were changed at the last moment.

Haseena Parkar

This Shraddha Kapoor starrer movie was initially titled The Queen Of Mumbai: Haseena. But just before the release date, the makers of the film decided to change the name of the movie to Haseena Parkar so that the title will be more relatable to the audience outside the city.

Padmaavat

The titles of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films have always invited troubles for the filmmaker. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s previous film Padmaavat starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor was originally named Padmavati. Due to the fierce protests and death threats from the political groups, the director had to release the film with a changed name Padmaavat.

Loveyatri

Ayush Sharma and Warina Hussain made their Bollywood debut with the film Loveyatri. The original title was Loveratri which the makers of the film had decided. But there were a few groups of people who thought that the film was making fun of their festival Navratri. An FIR was lodged against Salman Khan and the makers of the film due to which they had to change the name of the movie just before the release of the film.  

Judgementall Hai Kya

This Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao starrer film Judgementall Hai Kya was initially titled Mental Hai Kya. The title of the film was objected by the Indian Psychiatric Society who thought that the film is degrading the people who are suffering from mental issues.

Laxmmi

Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani's Laxmmi too faced objections from the public to change the name of the film. The makers of the film had originally decided to have the name Laxmmi Bomb which was then changed to laxmmi. The change in name happened because a group of right-wing organizations threatened to boycott the film all over the country. Hence the makers had to change the name of their film.  

R...Rajkumar

Sonakshi Sinha and Shahid Kapoor starrer film R...Rajkumar also had to change the name before its release. The film was originally titled Rambo Rajkumar. The makers of the Hollywood film series Rambo had the copyrights reserved for the word. Hence the producers of Shahid’s movie had to change the title to R...Rajkumar.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela was the first film of Sanjay Leela Bhansali which faced trouble from the religious group for the title of the film. The film was originally named Raamleela which starred Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in the leading roles. A petition was filed by the religious group to change the name of the film which the makers had to accept before the release of the movie.

Billu

This Irrfan Khan’s light-hearted film was initially titled Billu Barber. The film also had an extended cameo of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in it. The makers of the film had to remove the word Barber from the movie title after the hairstylist revealed that the term sounds offensive and hurts their sentiments.     

Madras Cafe

John Abraham starrer film Madras Cafe was initially titled Jaffna by the makers of the film. The film deals with the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Jaffna is a popular place in Sri Lanka. Due to the immense pressure from the neighboring country, the makers had to change the name of the film to Madras Cafe. 

Indeed, there have been so many examples, where the filmmakers had to change the name of their films in order to get released in the theatre. So, will we see Gangubai Kathiawadi’s name change before its release? Do let us know your views in the comment section. 

Gangubai Kathiawadi is all set to release on the silver screen on 25th February 2022. The film will see the talents like Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, and a few others in pivotal roles.
