MUMBAI: Nowadays, while Bollywood films are made with a runtime of 2 hours 15 to 2 hours 30 minutes, filmmakers down South prefer to make big films where the runtime with interval clearly reaches to 3 hours. Today, we saw Ponniyin Selvan Part 2, also known as PS 2, a movie with a runtime of 165 mins which means 2 hours 45 mins of runtime. So, is PS 2 worth your time and money? Read on to know more...

PS 1 had ended on a note where we were left with many questions. Who is Mouni Rani? How is she related to Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan)? Is Ponniyin Selvan (Jayam Ravi) alive or did he die? What will happen to the Chola Kingdom because of all the internal politics? Well, all these questions are answered in the second part of the film PS 2.

Ponniyin Selvan franchise is a dream project for Mani Ratnam and we can see that he has narrated the film with all his heart and it has the perfect grandeur required for such movies. The movie has some moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The scene between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Chiyaan Vikram is the highlight of the film.

But, when you make a movie with a runtime of 2 hours 45 mins it has to have an engaging screenplay and narration to keep the audiences hooked to the screens. Some scenes in the movie are too long and could have been easily edited. If the film was trimmed by 15-20 mins the impact would have been better.

Also, the makeup of the actresses is pitch perfect as if the movie is set in today's times. We aren't saying that the queens in that era didn't dress up or do makeup, but when you see a perfectly put wing liner on Aishwarya's eyes then of course it makes you wonder.

One of the biggest factors that works in the favor of the film is the performances. This movie is a treat for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's fans. It's a role that suits her perfectly and she is simply excellent, especially in the scene with Chiyaan Vikram. After Aishwarya, it is Karthi who steals the show. He was wonderful in the first part and he is the same in the second installment as well. Chiyaan Vikram and Jayan Ravi, both the actors are damn good in the film, and the latter looks dashing. Trisha gets less scope this time, but whatever she has, the actress has done well. All the other supporting cast are good in their respective roles.
Apart from performances, one more thing that impresses us is the music of AR Rahman. The background score of the film surely elevates the movie and takes the movie a notch higher.

Overall, Ponniyin Selvan 2 is a grand film and the actors have performed amazingly. If you have watched the first installment, then you have to watch the sequel. But, keep patience as it is too long.
